Photinia Red Robin is a popular alternative to the usual evergreen hedging choices due to its bright satin red display of new growth during the spring and summer months – older mature foliage is a typical dark green colour. Bunches of small white flowers will be on display from the middle of spring until June but the bright foliage is the standout feature of this versatile plant.
It is fast growing (over a foot per year), and frost hardy down to -10 degrees. It prefers a full sun position but will also grow successfully in partial shade. Once established it is fairly drought tolerant, but newly planted specimens and hedges will require regular watering over the first 12 months while they develop a stronger root system.
They will grow well in most soil types providing they are well drained. Ultimately photinia can reach 4.5 - 5m tall with a similar width, although regular pruning can keep them at a desired size. A good time to prune would be when the white flowers begin to die off – avoid pruning after the end of July to prevent new growth being damaged by early frosts.
