The Vivid Photinia Red Robin

Often called ‘The Christmas berry red robin’, the Photinia Red Robin (Photinia x fraseri), is a versatile evergreen shrub that is noted for its vivid red colour – ideal to brighten the garden even on the gloomiest of days.

Planted from autumn to spring, this shrub prefers a position in full sun or partial shade and in fairly well-drained soil. If well cultivated, it can reach a height of 18 feet and a width of 12 feet. Aside from its distinctive, attractive colour, the other great attraction to the Red Robin plant is the ease in which it can be pruned – even the most inexperienced gardeners can easily and quickly manage its growth.

Cultivating Photinia Red Robin

The Photinia Red Robin is fully hardy, withstanding temperatures of down to -12°C; when placed in a protected position, it is hardy to even a few degrees lower.

The main interest of the plant is its bright red leaf tips that will turn green as they mature – if they are left without pruning during the previous year, they will produce a mass of attractive tiny white flowers in the summer months.

The roots can grow in most soils, except heavy clay or waterlogged conditions – it does best in a deep loam soil, although this is not essential. As mentioned, the plant prefers full sun although it does well in partial shade too – just avoid a fully-shaded position. Once established, it will rarely need watering and will tolerate a moderate drought.

Being a versatile shrub, the Christmas berry red robin can be grown as a specimen plant, on its own in a container, as a loose hedge or against a wall or fence. However, it is not suitable to use as a barrier hedge because it doesn’t produce thorns and be parted very easily.

In terms of disease resistance, Phontinia Red Robin suffers from very little, with the exception of leaf spots. These symptoms take the form of dark red/black spots on leaves, eventually leading them to fall off – a rigorous pruning of the affected leaves will help to stop the spread of the disease, leaving you to enjoy the long-term aesthetic qualities of this beautiful garden hedge.
