The Exquisite Viburnum Tinus

If you’re looking to give your garden a warm, Mediterranean feel all year round, then the planting of Viburnum Tinus will be ideal. A large, dense, evergreen shrub with dark and oval glossy leaves, the beauty in this plant lies in the contrast between its leaves and the fragrant pink-white flowers. Produced in the late winter, the exquisite flowers bloom in spring and are followed by the growth of blue-black berries.

Viburnum is a popular choice as a hedging plant but can also be grown as a specimen shrub within a mixed border. Being low-maintenance, it will grow well in most light conditions and is a medium drought-tolerant plant, so is relatively easy for any gardener to grow in their grounds. Want to attract butterflies to your garden? The viburnum plant is the one for you!

Regardless of the reason you’re looking to plant some viburnum, you’ve found the right place here at Seagrave Nurseries for high-quality garden plants.

Cultivating Viburnum Tinus

Before you go ahead and plant your viburnum hedge, planning for its planting should always take root first. Only by taking the time to assess what the needs of the plant are and how they relate to the situation of the landscape, is vital in how the plant develops.

Although it is tolerant of shade, Viburnum Tinus best thrives in moist but well-drained soil, with access to full sun. The soil should be mulched annually with well-rotted manure or compost and the plant should be cut back in early summer to retain its shape.

The Viburnum is harmless towards human and animal life, but the Tinus, in particular, is known as being a major host of the viburnum beetle ; a pest that plays havoc upon plants in South-East England in particular. They quickly produce larvae that is normally too much to hand pick off, so attacks may have to be tolerated – although they may leave plants looking tatty, they can usually survive a severe defoliation. The Royal Horticultural Society also advises that if used, pesticides should be sprayed on plants from mid-April to early May to prevent a significant build-up of Viburnum beetle larvae.
